Princess Soraya Esfandiary-Bakhtiari was an Iranian princess and the second wife of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the last Shah of Iran. She was born on June 22, 1932, in Isfahan, Iran, and was the daughter of Khalil Khan Esfandiary-Bakhtiari, an Iranian nobleman.
Princess Soraya was known for her beauty and elegance and was widely admired in Iran and abroad. She was crowned Miss Iran in 1951 and became a beloved figure in Iranian society. In 1953, she married the Shah of Iran in a lavish ceremony in Tehran.
Despite her popularity, Princess Soraya's marriage to Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was not a happy one. The couple struggled to conceive a child, and the Shah reportedly became increasingly distant from his wife. In 1958, the couple divorced, and Princess Soraya spent the rest of her life living primarily in Europe.
Princess Soraya was known for her philanthropic work and was a patron of the arts. She was well-educated and fluent in several languages, including English, German and French. The princess died in 2001 in Paris, France, at the age of 69. Her life remains a symbol of Iran's tumultuous past and its rich cultural history.
